For years, I had been content sourcing home goods, accessories, and apparel from a variety of brands and makers. I marvelled at the creativity and craftsmanship of others, appreciating the time and care they poured into their work. But over time, I found myself yearning for something more - a deeper sense of creative fulfillment and the opportunity to bring my own vision to life. It was then that I decided to embark on a new journey, one that would challenge me to step out of my comfort zone and into the role of product designer.
The decision to start designing my own products was not one I made lightly. As someone who had always admired the work of others, the prospect of crafting something entirely original felt both exhilarating and daunting. I knew it would require me to tap into a well of creativity I hadn't fully explored before, to hone new technical skills, and to navigate the complexities of turning an idea into a tangible, functional item. But the allure of this new creative direction was simply too compelling to ignore.
So I decided to focus on three main points:-
Connecting to Our Emotions
Colour is a powerful tool. with the ability to evoke distinct emotional responses. The hues, tones, and shades we surround ourselves with can have a profound impact on our mood, mindset, and overall well-being.
Warm colours like reds, oranges, and yellows can instill a sense of energy, passion, and optimism, while cooler blues and greens have a more calming, soothing effect. The careful selection of colours in our home decor and accessories allows us to cultivate specific emotional environments - from invigorating spaces that boost productivity, to tranquil retreats that facilitate relaxation. By mindfully incorporating colour into our textile choices, we can harness its ability to uplift our spirits, reduce stress, and create spaces that nourish our emotional needs.
The Beauty of Handmade
In an age of mass production and fast fashion, the allure of handmade goods has never been stronger. While mass-produced home accessories and textiles may offer convenience and affordability, they often lack the depth of character and connection that comes from products crafted by human hands. Handmade goods are imbued with a sense of authenticity that machine-made items simply cannot replicate.
Each handmade pillow, blanket, or vase tells a unique story - the subtle variations in the weave, the gentle imperfections in the glaze, the palpable traces of the maker's touch. This authenticity not only lends inherent beauty to the object, but also speaks to the sustainability of the creative process. Rather than relying on unseen, untraceable supply chains, handmade home goods honour the time, skill, and care of the individual artisan. By supporting these makers, we invest in a more mindful, environmentally-conscious way of furnishing and decorating our living spaces. In a world that often prioritises speed and convenience over quality and craft, handmade offers a refreshing antidote - a return to a more meaningful, intentional way of living with the objects that surround us.
Step Away From the Crowd
It is very easy to get swept up in trends and fashions. Stepping away from the crowd can be daunting and challenging. In a world that often values conformity, finding the courage to express your true, authentic self can be incredibly empowering. Your individual style - the way you dress, accessorise and present yourself to the world - is a powerful reflection of your unique personality, experiences, and values.
Your home is an extension of your personal style, so embrace the same spirit of individuality when it comes to your living space. Decorate with pieces that speak to your interests and values - whether that's displaying your collection of vintage vinyl, hanging artwork that inspires you, or filling your shelves with eclectic trinkets gathered from your travels. By surrounding yourself with objects that reflect your unique tastes and experiences, you create an environment that nurtures your sense of self and allows your personality to shine.
While the journey of product design has presented its fair share of challenges - from learning new technical skills to overcoming self-doubt - I can say with certainty that I have no regrets about embarking on this creative path. The process of transforming a concept into a tangible, functional item has been immensely rewarding, providing a profound sense of emotional fulfillment that I had been searching for. There is something deeply gratifying about seeing my own original ideas come to life, and knowing that I've poured my heart and soul into every detail. Of course, stepping away from the security of being a consumer to become a creator has not been without its trepidations.
Trusting my own vision and intuition, rather than deferring to the work of others, has required a significant leap of faith. But it is a leap I am grateful to have taken, for it has unlocked a wellspring of creativity and allowed me to forge a deeper, more authentic connection to the objects that fill my daily life. The road ahead may be winding, but I am energised by the promise of new challenges and the opportunity to continually evolve my craft.
